A recent personal account from North Central Florida’s Representative Kat Cammack has brought renewed focus to the challenges women face accessing timely healthcare in the wake of Florida’s restrictive abortion laws. Cammack publicly described a harrowing experience with a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy. The situation, she explained, was complicated by confusion among healthcare providers regarding the scope of exceptions within the state’s six-week abortion ban. While the law permits abortions to save the life of the mother, as well as in cases of rape or incest, Cammack asserts that misinformation, fueled by groups opposing abortion access, created unneeded delays in her care.

According to a 2023 report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly half of U.S. counties are considered “maternity care deserts,” lacking sufficient resources to support pregnant individuals and new mothers. This scarcity is particularly acute in rural areas, exacerbating the risks associated with pregnancy complications.
