Chef Choi Hyun-seok’s Restaurant Implements Dress Code, Sparking Debate
A fine dining restaurant operated by South Korean chef Choi Hyun-seok is generating discussion after implementing a dress code policy. Choi’s restaurant, ‘Choi Dot,’ recently gained renewed attention following his appearance on the Netflix entertainment show “Culinary Class Wars”, announced it requests patrons “avoid wearing revealing clothes,” prompting varied reactions regarding dress standards in upscale dining establishments.
According to the ‘Guide and Precautions’ section on ‘Choi Dot’s’ Catch Table reservation platform, the restaurant asks guests to refrain from clothing that is “too revealing or may cause inconvenience to other customers.” The reservation process specifies a ‘smart casual’ dress code and requires confirmation that guests will not wear slippers or flip-flops.
The notice gained traction after being shared on social networking services, with some users questioning the necessity of such a rule and speculating about the attire that prompted it. Others defended the policy, arguing that a certain level of dress code is appropriate for fine dining. Some speculated that previous guests wearing revealing clothing may have caused discomfort to other diners.
Dress codes are common in the fine dining industry to maintain a restaurant’s concept and atmosphere. However, the specifics and wording of these standards vary, leading to ongoing interpretation and discussion.
Chef Choi Hyun-seok previously articulated his restaurant’s philosophy through an official Instagram post, stating a belief in the importance of cultural diversity and a desire to create a fine dining experience that is accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.
