It’s the one place in Cork where people know how to drive
If you ask anybody who battles through Cork’s bonkers traffic every morning or evening about the ‘Soundabout’ – the chances are, they will know immediately what you are talking about.
The roundabout, officially known as the N40/N28 interchange, has become somthing of a legend in Cork city. It’s notorious for its complexity, with multiple lanes, a flyover, and a constant stream of traffic. But despite its reputation, many locals claim it’s the one place in Cork where drivers actually know what they’re doing.
“It’s the only place where people indicate, merge properly, and generally aren’t trying to kill you,” one commenter wrote on a local Facebook group. “It’s like everyone suddenly remembers how to drive when they hit the Soundabout.”
Another user chimed in, “Seriously, it’s a miracle. You can actually make progress without fearing for yoru life.”
The theory is that the Soundabout’s complexity forces drivers to pay attention and follow the rules of the road. Unlike some of the smaller, more chaotic roundabouts around the city, there’s little room for error on the N40/N28 interchange.
“It’s a baptism of fire,” said a local taxi driver. “If you can navigate the Soundabout, you can navigate anything.”
Whether it’s down to self-preservation, a shared understanding of the roundabout’s challenges, or simply a higher concentration of competent drivers, the Soundabout remains a talking point for Cork motorists. It’s a place where, against all odds, order prevails amidst the chaos.
