Denmark’s Foreign Minister Faces Criticism Over Smoking and Unusual Habits Ahead of Election

Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, is facing scrutiny over his public acknowledgment of smoking habits and unconventional personal routines as the country prepares for elections on March 24, 2026. The controversy centers on his comments regarding cigarettes and hygiene practices, sparking debate and criticism from health organizations.

Statements on Smoking Draw Backlash

In an interview with Euroman magazine, Rasmussen revealed his preference for Kings C 021 cigarettes, marketed as additive-free, stating, “There are no additives, so the research says that it is easier to quit. It’s nice to have that knowledge.” This statement drew immediate criticism from the Danish Cancer Society, which argued that all cigarettes are harmful and that promoting even additive-free options normalizes smoking.

Mette Lolk Hanak, director of prevention at the Danish Cancer Society, emphasized the organization’s commitment to protecting the population from tobacco and nicotine products, stating, “It is highly unfortunate when well-known people help to normalize smoking and spread incorrect knowledge that can trivialize the seriousness of all smoking.”

Past Attempts to Conceal Smoking

According to Danish media outlet BT, advisors had previously attempted to downplay and conceal the extent of Rasmussen’s smoking in public, avoiding images that showcased his habit. However, Rasmussen has appeared more open about his smoking recently, including an incident during a visit to the United States in January where he was photographed smoking in front of the press and television cameras. This led to commentary from American media, such as Fox News, highlighting his smoking.

Unconventional Personal Habits

Beyond his smoking, Rasmussen also revealed unusual habits regarding his morning routine. He stated he drinks two coffees at night and another in the morning, claiming to be unaffected by the caffeine. He also admitted to occasionally using hand soap to brush his teeth, stating, “Sometimes I just use hand soap. It works, too. Then I feel like coffee afterwards. It’s a way to wake up.”
