New Study Shows Link Between Flossing and Reduced Stroke Risk

Chicago, IL – A groundbreaking new study presented at the International Conference on Stroke 2025, organized by the American Stroke Association, has revealed a significant association between regular dental flossing and a lower risk of stroke. The 25-year study, encompassing over 6,000 participants, found that individuals who flossed at least once a week experienced a notable reduction in their chances of experiencing both ischemic and cardioembolic strokes.

Ischemic strokes, caused by blood clots blocking blood flow to the brain, were 22% less likely to occur in regular flossers. Furthermore, the risk of cardioembolic stroke, where a clot travels from elsewhere in the body to the brain, was 44% lower in those who practiced regular flossing.

Interestingly, the benefits of flossing seemed independent of other oral hygiene practices like brushing and regular dental checkups. This suggests a unique impact of flossing on cardiovascular health, possibly by reducing inflammation and oral infections known to contribute to artery narrowing and heart disease.

Dr. Souvik Sen, the lead author of the study, emphasized the importance of gum health in maintaining overall cardiovascular health. "Flossing is a simple, accessible, and cost-effective habit that can have a profound impact on your health," Dr. Sen said. "In an era where dental care can be expensive, incorporating regular flossing into your routine is an easy and powerful step towards preventing serious health issues."

While the research offers promising insights, Dr. Sen cautions that these findings are preliminary and require further investigation through larger-scale studies. Nevertheless, the study highlights a compelling connection between oral hygiene and cardiovascular health, urging individuals to prioritize flossing as part of a broader approach to preventative healthcare.

The American Stroke Association encourages individuals to discuss their cardiovascular health with their healthcare providers and adopt healthy lifestyle habits, including regular flossing, to reduce their risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
