Why Was ‘Dune: Part Two’ Skipped Over for a Golden Globe?

The 2024 Golden Globe nominations brought plenty of surprises, and one of the most talked-about omissions was Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel, “Dune: Part Two.” Notably absent from the “Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” category, the film’s exclusion sparked widespread debate online.

### A Look at the Eligibility Criteria

Introduced in 2023, this category presents a unique challenge for films seeking recognition. To qualify, movies must gross over $150 million globally, with a minimum of $100 million domestically. According to Box Office Mojo, “Dune 2” crossed the $700 million mark globally. Clearly, it met the financial requirements.

The award recognizes films that have achieved both critical acclaim and box-office success, garnering significant global audience support and showcasing cinematic excellence.

### Was ‘Dune 2’ Intentionally Left Out?

Portuguese film critic Cláudio Alves, a Golden Globe voting member, shed light on the situation. He revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that studios submit films for consideration in this category, and “Dune: Part Two” wasn’t among the 16 films vying for the award.

Responding to a social media user, Alves wrote: “Sadly, we could only vote for the films submitted by their distributors in that category. And only 16 films were actually submitted.”

He went on to say: “Neither ‘Longlegs,’ ‘The Substance’ or ‘Terrifier 3,’ or even ‘Dune: Part Two’ were up for consideration.”

According to insiders close to the film’s campaign, the decision boiled down to strategic choices. The “Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” category is relatively new and hadn’t yet solidified its place on the awards circuit, potentially lacking the prestige of the top categories like “Best Picture.”

“Dune 2” has already garnered critical acclaim and nominations for Best Picture – Drama and Hans Zimmer’s original score (which isn’t eligible for the Oscars), so focusing on those categories seemed more advantageous.

### A Stellar Year for ‘Dune: Part Two’

Despite the Golden Globes snub, “Dune: Part Two” has been met with widespread praise and box office success. Released in March, it is firmly poised for another Oscar run, hoping to emulate or even surpass the Academy Awards glory of “Dune: Part One,” which swept six awards, including Best Sound.

### Stay Tuned!

Will “Dune: Part Two” secure a Best Director nomination for Villeneuve this time around? Only time will tell. We’ll be watching closely as the awards season unfolds.
