Did Tesla Steal from ‘Blade Runner 2049’? Film Producers Say Yes
The futuristic vision Tesla presented for their robotaxi concept appears to have borrowed inspiration a bit too closely, according to Alcon Entertainment, producers of "Blade Runner 2049".
According to court documents filed on Monday in Los Angeles federal court, Tesla allegedly utilized an AI-generated image resembling iconic visuals from the 2017 film while promoting their robotaxi idea at Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio lot earlier this month. Interestingly, Tesla’s reported use of AI imagery appears to stem from them turning down Alcon’s request to feature an established, iconic scene from "Blade Runner 2049" in the promotional event.
This isn’t merely aesthetic similarity; the lawsuit outlines specific details of Tesla’s presentation, noting Elon Musk’s explicit connection between Tesla’s robotaxi and both the idea of "Blade Runner" and a “specifically apocalyptic future” vision. Notably, the imagery remained onscreen for 11 seconds during Musk’s keynote address.
Politics Plays a Role?
Adding a layer to the dispute, Alcon states they were unwilling to associate themselves with Musk’s brand and Tesla for reasons beyond just the aesthetic similarity. Their official court filing cites concerns with Musk’s public behavior and political stances, alleging “highly politicized, capricious, and arbitrary behavior” which sometimes crosses the line into hate speech. The company argues, in relation to Musk’s influence, that even without active endorsement, potential association by proxy creates unwanted entanglement that harms their brand image.
The lawsuit also hints at the legal complexities behind the situation. Despite Warner Bros. Pictures, being Alcon’s domestic distributor for “Blade Runner 2049”, some rights might remain with the studio under specific limitations and restrictions, potentially adding legal maneuvering between the parties.
Furthermore, the timing adds complexity. Musk has actively stepped up his political campaigning and endorsements, supporting former President Trump and launching a social media campaign in Pennsylvania promising giveaways. Given Elon Musk’s profile in politics, his recent alignment with former President Trump may have further pushed Alcon’s desire to avoid association.
This saga unfolds amidst the broader tech and entertainment industry’s increasing scrutiny surrounding the lines blurred by AI, especially when it comes to imagery.
