Clintons to Testify in Epstein Investigation as Democrats Prepare to Subpoena Trump
WASHINGTON — Bill and Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify before the House Oversight Committee regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following the threat of a contempt of Congress hold. This decision comes as Democrats signal their intent to subpoena former President Donald Trump when they regain power, establishing a precedent set by Republicans in pursuing testimony from past leaders and their families.
Precedent Set for Subpoena Power
The agreement by the Clintons to testify has sparked debate over the extent of Congress’s subpoena power. Democrats argue that Republicans have created a precedent that will inevitably lead to Donald Trump being compelled to testify under oath. Representative Ted Lieu of California stated that Democrats are prepared to subpoena Trump when they retake control of the House.
Former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of the situation and questioning Trump’s potential reaction to a similar subpoena. Representatives Maxwell Frost and Mark Pocan further emphasized the willingness of Democrats to utilize this precedent, potentially extending subpoenas to Trump’s children and other associates.
Trump’s Previous Statements on Epstein
Recent documents released by the Justice Department reveal that Donald Trump informed the FBI he was pleased with Epstein’s arrest, stating, “Thank goodness you’re stopping him [Epstein], everyone has known he’s been doing this.” Trump too reportedly described Epstein’s associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, as “evil.” He also stated he left a situation where teenagers were present, saying he “got the hell out of there.”
These statements contrast with allegations within the Epstein files, including claims of underage girls being subjected to sexual acts with Trump and sex trafficking operations at his golf courses. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged in connection with the Epstein case.
Frost’s Investigation and Calls for Impeachment
Representative Maxwell Frost, a member of the Oversight panel, has been actively investigating the Epstein files, utilizing crowdsourcing through Reddit to identify key documents. Frost claims to have uncovered evidence contradicting Trump’s account of barring Epstein from Mar-a-Lago and undermining statements made by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick regarding his relationship with Epstein.
Frost has called for the impeachment of Attorney General Pam Bondi, accusing her of excessive redaction of the Epstein files and alleged surveillance of lawmakers’ search histories. He criticized the DOJ’s limitations on access to the files, including two-hour review sessions and restrictions on electronic devices.
Ongoing Investigations and Pursuit of Accountability
The House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed JP Morgan and Deutsche Banks for financial records related to Epstein and Maxwell, and five additional depositions are scheduled. Frost believes the investigation will lead to accountability for numerous individuals involved in Epstein’s crimes, describing it as a “reckoning for this nation.”
