Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on the hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” has died at the age of 53 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his publicist confirmed on Thursday, February 19, 2026.
A Career Defined by “McSteamy” and Beyond
Dane rose to prominence playing the charming and often reckless Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” on “Grey’s Anatomy” beginning in 2006. He appeared in 139 episodes of the series, and similarly had a role in its spin-off, “Private Practice.” CNN reports that he “steamed up primetime TV” during the show’s peak popularity.
Prior to his iconic role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Dane appeared in several television series, including “Roseanne,” “Married… With Children,” and “Charmed,” where he played Jason Dean. His film credits include “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Valentine’s Day,” and “Burlesque.” More recently, he had a role in the HBO series “Euphoria,” with his final appearance set to air posthumously in the show’s third season. ALS Diagnosis and Advocacy
Eric Dane publicly announced his diagnosis of ALS in April 2025. CBS News notes that ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle control loss. The disease is fatal and currently has no cure.
Following his diagnosis, Dane became an advocate for ALS awareness and research, partnering with the “I Am ALS” organization on its Push for Progress initiative. TODAY reports that he aimed to raise $1 billion for ALS research.

Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family shared a statement expressing their grief and highlighting the love and support he received throughout his battle with ALS.
