PlayStation Shuts Down Bluepoint Games, Studio Behind Demon’s Souls Remake
PlayStation has shut down Bluepoint Games, the studio renowned for its critically acclaimed remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. The closure, confirmed by PlayStation, will impact approximately 70 employees next month.
A Legacy of Remakes and Support Work
Founded in 2006 by former Retro Studios employees, Bluepoint Games initially focused on collections and ports of existing PlayStation titles, including the God of War Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. The studio also provided support on games like PlayStation All-Stars, Flower, and Titanfall.
Critical Acclaim with Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls
Bluepoint Games gained widespread recognition for its 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus and its 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls, both of which were lauded by critics and fans alike. Sony acquired Bluepoint in 2021 following the success of the Demon’s Souls remake.
Canceled Live-Service Project and Studio Closure
Following the acquisition, Bluepoint Games briefly engaged in co-development work on God of War Ragnarok. Although, a live-service God of War title the studio was developing was canceled in January 2025. Despite pitching novel projects throughout last year, Bluepoint was ultimately shuttered as reported by IGN.
“Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community,” a PlayStation spokesperson stated to Bloomberg. “We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftmanship.”
Sony’s Shift in Strategy
The closure of Bluepoint Games follows Sony’s recent decisions to shut down other gaming ventures, including the multiplayer shooter Concord and Firewalk Studios, the developer behind it according to Engadget. This suggests a potential shift in Sony’s strategy regarding live-service games and studio investments as noted by GameSpot.
