Red Fox’s Transatlantic Journey to New York

A red fox has completed an unusual journey, stowing away on a cargo ship traveling from Southampton, England, to New York City. The animal is now in the care of the Bronx Zoo, where staff report it is settling in well.

Unexpected Stowaway

The fox, a male estimated to be around two years old and weighing 11 pounds (5 kilograms), was discovered by the ship’s crew while traveling to the Port of New York and New Jersey. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials then brought the animal to the Bronx Zoo on February 19, 2026 according to the Associated Press.

It remains unclear how the fox boarded the ship, which was carrying automobiles and departed Southampton on February 4, 2026. NBC New York reports that it is also unknown how the animal survived the two-week voyage.

Care at the Bronx Zoo

Zoo director of animal programs, Keith Lovett, stated the fox “seems to be settling in well” and “has gone through a lot.” The AP reports that initial examinations indicate the fox is in good health.

Currently, the fox is residing in the zoo’s veterinary center and is being fed a diet of produce, proteins, and biscuit-like items, as it is an omnivore. ABC News confirms this dietary arrangement.

Future Plans

The Bronx Zoo is conducting further health screenings, and a long-term home for the fox will be determined once these are complete. The species, Vulpes vulpes, is commonly found in Europe, Asia, North America, and parts of Africa.
