France Plunged into Crisis: Government Collapses After Just 14 Hours
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The political crisis in France deepened after the Prime Minister (PM) sebastien Lecornu and the entire cabinet resigned on Monday (6/10/2025). This occurred only hours after the official cabinet was announced.
This government is recorded as the shortest in modern French history, with Lecornu serving as PM for just 27 days and his government lasting only 14 hours.
The rapid and unexpected resignation immediately shook the financial market. The Paris reference stock index, CAC 40, plummeted 2%, while the Euro currency slipped 0.7% to the level of US $1.1665.
So, what caused President emmanuel macron’s chosen PM to retreat so quickly?
In his brief speech, Lecornu bluntly blamed the divided state of parliament. He cited a reluctance of politicians to compromise as the primary reason for his decision.
“A person cannot be the prime minister when the conditions are not met,” Lecornu stated.
He accused the “ego” of rigid opposition politicians, entrenched in their respective party manifestos, and their refusal to compromise. He also criticized members of his own minority coalition, who were perceived as prioritizing personal presidential ambitions over the interests of the country.
“You must always prioritize your country than your party,” he said.
The main trigger for this crisis was the composition of the new cabinet announced by Lecornu. Rather of fostering unity, the cabinet announcement angered both opponents and political allies.
