Norway’s “Affeksjonsverdi” Wins Oscar for Best International Feature Film
Los Angeles, CA – In a historic moment for Norwegian cinema, the film “Affeksjonsverdi” (translated as “Affection Value”) won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards on March 20, 2026. The win marks the first time a Norwegian film has received this prestigious award.
A Norwegian Team Celebrates in Hollywood
Among those celebrating the victory in Los Angeles was Emilie Stang, 28, from Halden, Norway, who played a central role in the film’s production as a recording coordinator. Stang described the experience as “an incredibly unique experience.” She shared that two individuals from Halden were involved in the production, including Helge Bodøgaard, who served as the head of sound recording.
“It has been very, very fun and really an incredibly unique experience,” Stang said in a phone interview from Los Angeles. She described the atmosphere inside the Dolby Theatre as “overwhelming,” being surrounded by so many talented filmmakers.
Stang noted that despite being in the presence of numerous celebrities, she remained focused on celebrating the achievement with her team. The Norwegian crew was seated on the upper veranda, providing a direct view of the stage and the awards ceremony.
“Affeksjonsverdi” – A Historic Win
The moment “Affeksjonsverdi” was announced as the winner was described as “surreal” by Stang, filled with cheers, hugs, and tears. She emphasized the sense of accomplishment after months of hard work and dedication to the project.
Kjersti Mo, Director of the Norwegian Film Institute, hailed the win as a “historic moment for Norwegian film.” She congratulated the filmmakers, producers, and cast, recognizing the achievement as a testament to their artistic collaboration and the importance of Nordic and European cooperation in film production. From Halden to Hollywood
Stang’s journey to Hollywood began with her early involvement in culture and the arts in Halden, participating in dance and theater at Veslefrikk theater and Evolution Studio. After graduating from Porsnes upper secondary school in 2016, she attended Danvik media folk college in Drammen and secured an internship at Warner Bros in Norway, which launched her film career.
She joined the “Affeksjonsverdi” team through co-producer Lars Thomas Skare. Stang expressed her pride in sharing this success with another Halden resident, Helge Bodøgaard, highlighting the rarity of having multiple individuals from their hometown involved in an Oscar-winning film.
Looking Ahead
The Oscar win for “Affeksjonsverdi” is expected to significantly boost the profile of Norwegian cinema on the international stage. It underscores the value of investing in film production and fostering a creative environment that supports artistic freedom and collaboration. NFI
