A gambling addict who has lost tens of thousands of pounds because of his habit says slot machine arcades are preying on the vulnerable.

Fruit machines, officially known as Amusement with prizes (AWPs), are facing scrutiny over their potential link to gambling addiction. Concerns are rising about their availability, especially in poorer areas.
Zoë Osmond, head of Gamble Aware, a charity, explained: “We know there’s a lot of these places in areas where people don’t have much money, and people in those areas are twice as likely to have problems with gambling compared to those in wealthier areas.”
However, Bacta president Mr. Cullis argues that these venues are safe. He says they’re “controlled” environments with staff trained to spot and help people who might be developing a gambling problem.
“Player protection is central to our approach, and our machines are designed with inbuilt tools to encourage safe play and help prevent problem gambling,” he added.
He also pointed out that the games don’t cost much – as little as 10p per spin.
