Former Ibiza Council Secretary Shares Journey Through Cancer and Novel Book, ‘Morir no da miedo’
Víctor Almonacid Lamelas, who served as secretary of the Ibiza Council between 2017 and 2018, has publicly shared his experience battling cancer and a benign brain tumor. His journey of overcoming these health challenges has culminated in the publication of his new book, ‘Morir no da miedo’ (NPQ Editores), which he will present on Saturday, March 14th, at the Montesol Hotel in Ibiza from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Facing Dual Diagnoses
In April 2023, Almonacid Lamelas received diagnoses of thyroid cancer with metastasis and a benign brain tumor. He has since overcome both illnesses. The book, born from these difficult circumstances, is described not as a self-help guide, but as an “autobiographical essay” offering an honest account of his two-year experience and insights that may help others facing similar situations.
From Public Service to Personal Reflection
Almonacid, born in Valencia in 1973, is a prolific writer with over 30 publications to his name, primarily focused on public administration, management, and digital law. He likewise authored the essays ‘La divina comedia de la Administración: infierno, purgatorio y ¡paraíso!’ and ‘BurocracIA’. He currently resides in El Saler, Valencia, and is a legal and strategic consultant in the public sector, according to his LinkedIn profile. He is also Director of Innovation at the Fundación Novagob, as noted in his profile on Salma Cantos.
The Genesis of ‘Morir no da miedo’
The book began as personal reflections written shortly after his diagnosis in 2023. Almonacid explained that he documented his thoughts, learnings, concerns, and strategies for managing his fears, as well as information about his conditions. He finalized the 262-page book in November 2025, after beginning the writing process in 2023.
Beyond Cancer: A Guide to Facing Life’s Difficulties
Almonacid emphasizes that ‘Morir no da miedo’ is not solely about cancer, but rather a tool for navigating significant life challenges. He describes it as a “humble guide” offering potential support to those newly diagnosed, feeling lost and overwhelmed. The book details his experiences and the tools that proved helpful, as well as those that did not, and acknowledges his own mistakes along the way.
Caution Against Misinformation
Almonacid cautions against relying on internet searches or artificial intelligence for medical diagnoses. He stresses the importance of consulting with doctors and healthcare professionals, as AI provides statistical data without the necessary patient-specific context.
Acceptance and a Realistic Optimism
The author introduces the Inuit term “ayurnamat,” meaning to accept what cannot be controlled. He clarifies that acceptance is not resignation, but rather a foundation for a “realistic optimism” – maintaining a positive attitude while acknowledging reality and focusing on what is within one’s control, including medical treatment, family, and friends.
A Shift in Priorities
Following his health challenges, Almonacid made significant changes to his life. He left his position as a public executive in 2025, recognizing the toll it took on his health and well-being. He now works as a self-employed legal and strategic consultant, dedicating more time to writing, public speaking, and pursuing a master’s degree in Mindfulness and Positive Psychology.
Finding Life in the Face of Mortality
Almonacid states that the book does not dwell on death, but rather celebrates life. He expresses a lack of fear regarding mortality, emphasizing the importance of cherishing life while it lasts.
