Stanishev Criticizes Government’s handling of Bulgaria’s Economic Situation
Former Prime Minister and leader of the party of european Socialists, Sergey Stanishev, strongly criticized the current government’s actions, stating he would “never leave the country in such a situation” if he were in power. He made these remarks during an interview with BNT.
Stanishev believes politicians should take responsibility for their decisions, arguing that resignation is a way to avoid accountability. He specifically condemned the creation of what he calls an “illusory well-being” achieved by incurring debt and increasing deficits.
“in recent years, I’ve observed politicians constantly flirting with the people, even bribing them with generous gestures,” Stanishev explained. “These actions violated financial discipline and led to the budget that was widely rejected by experts and citizens alike. It created a false sense of security at the expense of our future.” He emphasized that all parties in power as 2020 failed to address this issue.
Stanishev pointed to the timing of Bulgaria’s planned Eurozone entry as particularly concerning. He argued that joining the Eurozone with a non-functional budget, lacking tools for government intervention, and amidst significant inflation is deeply irresponsible. He noted the tangible impact of inflation on everyday consumers, citing rising prices in stores.
He identified two key factors driving public discontent: the perceived arrogance of the ruling politicians and a sense of relief expressed by the Prime Minister during his resignation. Stanishev urged politicians to demonstrate humility and avoid pre-election rhetoric. He countered the narrative from outgoing officials warning of chaos without their leadership, and criticized the opposition, particularly PP-DB, for anticipating increased representation based on the current situation.
