Cricket Ireland Defends Afghanistan Series Amidst Taliban Concerns, Extends Invitation to Women’s Team

Cricket Ireland (CI) has defended its decision to host a bilateral One Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan this summer, despite the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s sports, acknowledging the “moral discomfort” the decision caused its board. The series, consisting of five ODIs, will be played from August 5 to 14, with the first two matches at Bready in Tyrone and the remaining three at Stormont in Belfast.

Balancing Sporting Ties with Ethical Concerns

The decision contrasts with actions taken by other international teams, including Australia and England, who have either cancelled or avoided scheduling bilateral series against Afghanistan since the Taliban regained power in 2021. However, Sarah Keane, CI’s recently appointed chief executive, emphasized that the board’s decision was made in the best interest of the organization as a whole.

“I’m not going to fob you off by saying that there’s financial reasons and there’s legal reasons. There aren’t,” Keane stated. “This has been a decision by Cricket Ireland in what it believes is the best interest of the organisation as a whole and the decision was made by the board this week.”

Invitation to Exiled Women’s Team

Alongside the decision to host the men’s team, CI has formally extended an invitation to the exiled Afghanistan women’s team to play fixtures in Ireland this summer. Scheduling conflicts related to the Afghan squad’s participation in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England may present challenges, but CI is actively exploring possibilities.

“We didn’t just invite the Afghan men to come here. We’ve also invited the Afghan women’s team to come here, and we’re in discussions around how that might happen,” Keane explained. “We need the plight of the Afghan women’s team to be very much on the agenda. They need to be supported.”

ICC Support for Afghan Women’s Cricket

Keane highlighted the ongoing efforts by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and others to establish a fund to support the Afghan women’s team, many of whom have fled into exile, particularly in Australia, due to the Taliban’s restrictions.

Global Principles and Athlete vs. Government Distinction

CI’s decision was also informed by a recent trend within the Olympic movement towards differentiating between athletes and their governments. Keane noted that the general principle across international sports is to treat athletes and players differently from their governing bodies.

Ireland’s 2026 International Schedule

The Afghanistan series is part of a broader home international schedule for Ireland in 2026. The men’s team will also host a Test match against Latest Zealand in May, and two T20Is against India in June, both at Stormont. A T20I tri-series with West Indies and Pakistan is also planned.

Ireland’s women’s team will participate in the Women’s T20 World Cup in England, followed by an ODI series against West Indies in July and ODIs against England in September.

Fixture Adjustments and Player Concerns

A planned bilateral series against Bangladesh was cancelled due to logistical and financial constraints, leading to the adjustment of the home schedule to focus on the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan. Andy Balbirnie, Ireland’s Test captain, expressed disappointment over the reduced number of home games, stating on Instagram, “Won’t lie, very disappointed to only have 8 home games this international summer.”

Venue Considerations

The Test match against New Zealand will be only Ireland’s third home men’s Test, and the first between the two countries. India’s brief tour will be held at the Civil Service Cricket Club Ground in Stormont, Belfast, as Malahide, Dublin, was unavailable due to logistical issues and nearby concerts.

Future Tours and Olympic Qualification

Ireland has also announced a planned men’s tour to Pakistan early next year, including a Test match, and anticipates participating in qualification events for the 2027 50-over World Cup and Olympic Games.
