Jeff Kaplan Details Pressure to Meet Overwatch Revenue Targets, Leading to His Blizzard Exit

Former Blizzard game director Jeff Kaplan, best known for his perform on World of Warcraft and Overwatch, recently revealed the intense financial pressures that ultimately led to his departure from the company in 2021. In a sweeping interview with Lex Fridman, Kaplan described a pivotal moment involving a direct ultimatum from Activision Blizzard’s then-CFO.

The Overwatch League and Financial Expectations

Kaplan’s exit followed nearly two decades with Blizzard. He explained that issues began to escalate with the commitments made to the Overwatch League, the game’s professional esports series. When Activision Blizzard failed to meet investor expectations, the burden of rectifying the situation fell upon the development team, creating pressure to expedite the release of Overwatch 2.

The CFO Ultimatum

The breaking point, according to Kaplan, came during a meeting with the company’s CFO. He recounted being told that Overwatch needed to generate a specific, undisclosed revenue amount in 2020, with recurring revenue targets set for subsequent years. He was directly informed that if these targets were not met, 1,000 employees would be laid off, and he would be held responsible. Kaplan described this moment as “the biggest f*** you moment I’ve had in my career,” stating it felt “surreal.”

Departure and Current Projects

Kaplan, who had anticipated retiring from Blizzard, realized this ultimatum signaled the conclude of his tenure with the company. He noted that the CFO in question has since left Activision Blizzard. Dennis Durkin served as CFO from 2019 to May 2021, succeeded by Armin Zerza until 2025.1

Currently, Kaplan is leading Kintsugiyama, a new studio, and is developing The Legend of California, an open-world action-survival shooter set during the California Gold Rush. The game is available to wishlist on Steam, with an alpha release planned for later in March 2026.2

Overwatch’s Evolution and Future

Following a period of change, Overwatch recently dropped the “2” from its title, with Blizzard president Johanna Faries stating the team views it as a “timeless game.”2 The game remains free-to-play and continues to feature collaborations with external intellectual properties, such as the recent crossover with NieR: Automata.

Overwatch is also slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 later in 2026.2
