According to reports, UNC wrestling coach Rob Koll actively sought Ferrari’s commitment, believing he would substantially bolster the team’s roster. Koll reportedly reached out to Belichick, emphasizing the strength of the existing team and suggesting Ferrari as a perfect addition.

As detailed by Mark manning of Hurrdat Sports,Belichick relayed Koll’s suggestion to Hudson,who later expressed reservations.”So [North Carolina wrestling coach Rob Koll] called me up and said, ‘You’ve got a great team. You should get AJ Ferrari,'” Manning recounts.”He convinced me and then off we went.” This “going” ultimately meant directing Belichick to steer clear of pursuing Ferrari further.
