Ukraine War Updates: Kyiv-Kharkiv Train Route Changes, Russian Strikes Intensify
Kyiv, Ukraine – March 21, 2026 – Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has implemented changes to the Intercity train route between Kyiv and Kharkiv due to ongoing hostilities and infrastructure disruptions. Simultaneously, Russian forces continue to target the Kharkiv region with increased aerial attacks, causing casualties and damage.
Kyiv-Kharkiv Train Service Disrupted
As of March 18, 2026, direct Intercity train service between Kyiv and Kharkiv has been suspended. Trains will now terminate at Poltava-Pivdenna station, requiring passengers to transfer to connecting routes to reach Kharkiv. This change affects Intercity train No. 723, which now operates from Poltava-Pivdenna instead of continuing directly to Kyiv from Kharkiv. MSN, Antikor, UNN
Passengers departing from Kharkiv can board train No. 223 to Poltava at 1:50 PM and then transfer to Intercity train No. 723 for the remainder of the journey to Kyiv. Ukrzaliznytsia confirms that tickets remain valid for the entire route and no exchanges are necessary. Station staff and train crews are providing assistance with the transfer process. UNN
As compensation for the inconvenience, passengers are being credited with 1000 bonus “hugs” within the Ukrzaliznytsia application, redeemable through the “Zalizni Propozytsii” loyalty program. UNN
The disruptions are expected to continue until at least the end of March, due to power shortages caused by Russian strikes. Gwara Media
