Resumed Search Efforts for Missing passengers of Sunken Ferry in Bali Strait
Denpasar, Bali – The intensive search operation for passengers remaining unaccounted for following the sinking of the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry in the Bali Strait has resumed. As of this morning, authorities are still working to locate 28 individuals.
The vessel, which was en route between Bali and Lombok, was carrying a total of 65 people – 53 passengers and 12 crew members – according to the ship’s manifest. This incident underscores the ongoing risks associated with maritime travel in the Indonesian archipelago, a region comprised of thousands of islands and heavily reliant on ferry transportation.According to data from the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT),ferry accidents, while decreasing still account for a notable percentage of maritime incidents in the country, often linked to factors like overloading, adverse weather conditions, and inadequate safety equipment.
To date, rescue teams have successfully recovered 31 survivors.Tragically, six bodies have been found, including that of a young child, a three-year-old, highlighting the devastating human cost of the disaster. The recovery of the deceased is a somber reminder of the perilous conditions faced by those onboard during the sinking.
The search operation was temporarily suspended yesterday due to heavy rainfall, which hampered visibility and made conditions unsafe for divers and search vessels. However, with improved weather, teams are once again deploying all available resources, including ships, helicopters, and divers, to scour the area. The search zone is being systematically expanded, taking into account prevailing currents and potential drift patterns.
The focus remains on locating any remaining survivors and recovering the bodies of those still missing. Authorities are also initiating a thorough investigation into the cause of the sinking, examining factors such as the vessel’s seaworthiness, adherence to safety regulations, and the prevailing weather conditions at the time of the incident. This investigation will be crucial in preventing similar tragedies in the future and ensuring the safety of maritime travel throughout Indonesia.
