Kompa Tuesdays: A Vibrant Hub for Haitian Culture and Networking in NYC
For 15 years, Kompa Tuesdays has been a cornerstone of Haitian culture in New York City, offering a weekly celebration of music, cuisine, fashion, and community. Held every Tuesday at The DL in Manhattan, the event has grown into a significant social and networking space for Haitian Americans and those interested in Haitian heritage.
A Celebration of Haitian Identity
Founded by Fred Lherisson, also known as Freddy Boom Boom, Kompa Tuesdays emerged from a desire to create a dedicated space for Haitian culture in a city lacking such a venue. “I just wanted Haitians and non-Haitians, just kompa lovers, anyone who is curious about the culture, to have a place to get a feel and taste,” Lherisson explained to the New York Daily News.
The event centers around Kompa music, a Haitian genre created in the 1950s by musician Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Characterized by instruments like the tanbou, congas, electric guitars, and trumpets, Kompa is also known for its intimate and sensual dance style. “It’s romantic, it’s sensual and just a beautiful dance,” Lherisson said.
More Than Just a Party: Networking and Community Building
Kompa Tuesdays has evolved into more than just a nightlife event; it’s a hub for professional networking and community empowerment. Lherisson emphasizes the importance of connections, stating, “Knowledge is power, but who you know matters, too.” The event regularly collaborates with organizations like the Haitian American Nurses Association and the Haitian American Lawyers Association of New York, providing opportunities for career advancement.
Attendees echo this sentiment. Ernest Barionnette, who works in law enforcement, notes, “You get to meet people within the community, people who are curious to the community and connect.” The diverse crowd includes people from various backgrounds, including Panamanians and Caucasians, creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
