KZN Braces for Severe Storms, Disaster Teams on High Alert
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents are preparing for potentially dangerous weather conditions as disaster management teams have been placed on high alert. The provincial government is responding to warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) of severe thunderstorms and potential flooding across large parts of the province.
Level 5 Weather Warning Issued
A Level 5 weather warning, indicating danger with serious flooding that threatens life and property, has been issued for northern parts of KZN . This upgrade from a Level 4 alert on Saturday signifies escalating risks. The warning predicts a combination of a cold front and a ridging high-pressure system will trigger widespread thunderstorms, heavy rain, damaging winds, and intense lightning from midday until midnight.
Areas at Risk
Several municipalities are under close monitoring, with rainfall expectations exceeding 100mm in concentrated areas . Specifically, eThekwini, Newcastle, Ladysmith (Alfred Duma), Port Shepstone (Ray Nkonyeni), and Pietermaritzburg (uMsunduzi), along with parts of the Midlands and coastal regions, are considered especially vulnerable.
Government Response
Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), has directed the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to coordinate with all District Disaster Hubs to ensure readiness . A Joint Operations Centre (JOC) has been activated to proactively manage the situation and stay ahead of the weather . Disaster management personnel are currently on high alert throughout the province .
Safety Precautions
Authorities are urging residents to take the following precautions:
- Avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.
- Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers or streams.
- Secure loose objects around properties.
- Move livestock to higher ground.
- Stay indoors, away from windows, during storms.
- Avoid using metal objects like umbrellas, golf clubs, or fishing rods.
- Residents in low-lying areas should move to higher ground immediately if water levels initiate to rise.
Recent Flooding Events
This warning comes after recent devastating flash floods impacted the KZN South Coast in December 2025, causing damage to roads, homes, and shopping centers in the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality . While no injuries were reported during those floods, significant infrastructure damage occurred.
Ongoing Monitoring
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre will continue to closely monitor weather patterns over the next 24 hours as the storm system moves across the province.
