Longtime Children’s Miracle Network Supporter Darren Echols Dies at 30

Lubbock, Texas – Darren Echols, a beloved figure within the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) community, passed away unexpectedly last week at the age of 30. Echols, who lived with cerebral palsy, dedicated much of his life to supporting CMN and became a symbol of resilience and joy for the organization.

Early Life and Medical Journey

Born 10 weeks prematurely, Darren Echols faced significant health challenges from birth. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and underwent 15 surgeries throughout his life, also experiencing close calls with illnesses like sepsis. Despite these obstacles, he maintained a positive outlook, nurtured by the care of his pediatrician, Dr. Doug Klepper.

A Lifelong Connection to the Children’s Miracle Network

Echols’ involvement with the Children’s Miracle Network spanned nearly his entire life. He regularly appeared at the end of KCBD’s annual telethons, becoming a familiar and cherished face to viewers. He often participated by enthusiastically banging on the drums during the fundraising announcements, a moment Dr. Klepper described as one of his favorite experiences.

“With CMN he really found a home that he could express that joy that he found in life despite what his limitations were in life,” said Dr. Klepper. “He was always there at the end, banging for the telethon. That was one of his favorite moments in his life.”

Community Impact and Legacy

Dr. Klepper, who retired last year, described Echols as a “good and kind soul” whose belief in the goodness of others transcended his physical limitations. KCBD’s Karin McCay and Abner Euresti visited Echols last year to celebrate his 30th birthday, recognizing his decades of dedication to CMN.

Echols passed away on Thursday after suddenly stopping breathing. Despite CPR efforts by his stepfather and subsequent medical intervention, he could not be revived.
