Martín José García Sánchez: A Pillar of Cádiz Society Passes Away
Martín José García Sánchez, a prominent figure in Cádiz, Spain, passed away on the night of Saturday, March 21, 2026. A lawyer, former president of the Council of Brotherhoods of Cádiz, councilor of Cádiz CF, and shareholder, García was deeply involved in the social and cultural fabric of the city. He was 83 years old.
Early Life and Education
Born in Cádiz in 1943, García’s family relocated to Cortegana (Huelva) when he was one year old. He returned to Cádiz at the age of 19, inheriting a legacy from his grandparents who owned businesses in the city – José Blas Fernández Sánchez, who continued his grandfather José Blas Sánchez’s seven wholesale delicatessen and food stores, and Martín García Jiménez, who operated slaughterhouse number 500 in Cortegana.
García pursued a career in education, initially studying in Huelva and later in Ceuta. He simultaneously earned degrees in Social Operate and Law from the UNED, graduating with the first class of Law graduates from that institution.
Legal Career and Sporting Involvement
In 1975, García established his first law office on Ancha Street in Cádiz, specializing in Labor and Sports Law. He participated in the founding of several associations related to Labor Law and directed the law firm Atela, with offices in Cádiz, and Chiclana.
His connection to Cádiz CF was particularly significant. He served as the club’s legal advisor, advisor, and secretary, representing them in numerous lawsuits, including cases before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, such as the case involving Javier Acuña. Cádiz CF currently competes in Segunda División.
García joined the board of directors of Cádiz CF in 1995, during a period when the club was owned by the Zeta Group. He was instrumental in forming the Bahía de Cádiz Group in 2002, alongside Antonio Muñoz, Paco Puig, Manolo Díez, and Miguel Cuesta, later joined by Federico González, during a time of crisis for the club. He also chaired the organizing committee of the Carranza Trophy on multiple occasions and, at times, personally ensured the preservation of Cádiz trophies from auction due to creditor claims.
Community and Religious Contributions
A devout Catholic, García served as president of the Association of Friends of the Holy Land, based in Santo Domingo. He was actively involved in local brotherhoods since childhood, belonging to the Brotherhood of Nazarene of Love, the Garden and Supper Prayer brotherhood, and demonstrating devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary. He preached for the Virgin of Hope, the Nazarene of Love, and Caridad, from Las Penas, and delivered proclamations, including one for Holy Week in Cortegana in 2011.
García’s most significant community contribution was his leadership of the Local Council of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods. He served as legal advisor alongside Rafael Corbacho and Miguel García Díaz, and later as president, overseeing the organization of the Bicentennial events, including the Magna Procession and exhibitions of Piety of the People.
Legacy
Martín José García Sánchez leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to Cádiz and its community. His contributions spanned legal expertise, sporting advocacy, and deep religious and cultural involvement. His passing marks a significant loss for the city.
