Meloni Marks 80 Years of Women’s Vote, Champions Equality as a Right, Not a Concession

ROME – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commemorated the 80th anniversary of the first time Italian women were able to vote, emphasizing the pivotal role women played in the birth of the Italian Republic and asserting that equality is a right, not a concession. Speaking at the event, “1946-2026 Women’s Vote. Italian Democracy Turns Eighty,” Meloni highlighted the ongoing journey towards full equality, stating the 1946 vote gave the Republic “an indelible democratic character.”

Meloni acknowledged the sacrifices and courage of the women who paved the way for her own position as Italy’s first female prime minister. “I couldn’t be where I am if it weren’t thanks to all the women before us who were not afraid to demonstrate their value,” she said.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of a “female vision of politics,” asserting that no issue is exclusively the domain of either men or women, and that all require a “composite sensitivity.”

Meloni expressed admiration for the women of Iran, recognizing their courage in challenging oppression to reclaim their freedom, and emphasized the importance of cherishing achievements that are often taken for granted.
