Barn Fire in Namsos: Approximately 30 Cattle Euthanized

NAMSDALSEID, Norway – A fire broke out in a barn in Namsos municipality, Trøndelag county, Norway, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, leading to the euthanasia of approximately 30 cattle. Emergency services responded to the scene at Namdalseid after receiving a report of smoke coming from the building at 4:34 PM local time.

Fire and Evacuation

The barn, a two-story structure, housed an estimated 70-100 cattle. Fire crews from Namdalseid, Namsos, and Malm worked to extinguish the blaze and evacuate the animals. According to initial reports, between 30 and 40 cattle were successfully evacuated to nearby fields. VG and NRK reported on the ongoing efforts.

Veterinary Assistance and Euthanasia

A veterinarian was called to the scene to assess the condition of the animals exposed to smoke and heat. Due to the damage to the barn and the inability to safely relocate all the animals, a decision was made to euthanize approximately 30 cattle. An emergency abattoir was dispatched to assist with this process. Namdalsavisa detailed the difficult decisions made by authorities.

Fire Extinguished, Investigation Underway

The fire was extinguished around 5:50 PM local time. While parts of the farm building remained intact, the barn itself sustained significant damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Police have opened a case and are continuing to monitor the site with a reduced crew. Approximately 12 animals were transported to neighboring farms for temporary shelter, while 40 remained in the intact portion of the barn.

Impact on Local Farms

The farm owners requested assistance in finding temporary housing for 20-30 animals. The incident highlights the challenges faced by farmers in ensuring the safety and well-being of their livestock during emergencies.
