Naro Expanded Cinema Gears Up for New Ownership, Continues Legacy as Norfolk Cultural Hub

For nearly half a century, the Naro Expanded Cinema has been a cornerstone of Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood, offering a curated selection of films and fostering a community around the art of cinema. Now, after 49 years at the helm, owners Tench Phillips and Thom Vourlas are preparing to pass the torch to longtime managers Kate Loftis and Theresa Schindler, ensuring the beloved independent theater’s continued vibrancy.

A Shared Passion for Film

The story of the Naro began with a transformative cinematic experience for Phillips and Vourlas. In 1976, the pair rented space in what was then called The Actor’s Theater to screen a series of films by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. After a successful run, they secured a lease and officially took over operation of the Naro in 1977. Their goal was to create a destination for entertainment and intellectual discussion, a place to analyze art and enjoy blockbusters alike.

Initially, the Naro showcased a mix of classic and new releases, including “The Godfather” and French filmmaker François Truffaut’s “The Story of Adele H.” The owners intentionally avoided expansion, prioritizing programming and maintaining the intimate atmosphere of the single-screen theater.

Navigating a Changing Landscape

Over the decades, the Naro faced numerous challenges, from the rise of cable television and VHS tapes to the emergence of video rental stores and large multiplexes like the one at MacArthur Center mall, which ultimately closed in January 2026. Showtimes.com reports the Naro has consistently avoided the fate of many struggling national chains.

A Smooth Transition

Phillips and Vourlas have chosen Loftis and Schindler, who have a combined 55 years of experience at the Naro, to lead the cinema into its next chapter. Loftis has worked at the Naro for 11 years, and Schindler for 44. They were instrumental in keeping the business afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People need somewhere that’s not their house and not their job,” Loftis said, emphasizing the Naro’s role as a “third place” for the community. The Naro Expanded Cinema’s website highlights its commitment to remaining a cultural landmark in Norfolk.
