New York City Marathon Set to Welcome Thousands of Runners

Almost everything is ready for one of the most interesting marathons ever, that of New York. In fact, on Sunday, November 2nd, around 55,000 athletes from over 150 countries will present themselves at the start on the Verrazzano bridge for the 54th edition of the TCS New York City Marathon.There will also be a strong Italian presence among the participants, with almost two thousand Italian runners attempting to complete the marathon and cross the final finish line. As confirmed by a spokesperson for the New York race, 3.59% of the runners will be from Italy, making it the second nation with the highest number of participants after the United states.

Meucci at the Start Among the Italians

Among the most anticipated athletes is former European champion daniele Meucci, who will race in the male professional athletes category. Originally from Pisa, Meucci is participating in New York for the fourth time and hopes to improve upon his eighth-place finish in 2022 with a time of 2h13’29. His best result remains from 2013 when he finished in 2h12’03”. The Italian Athletics federation (Fidal) highlights that the Army athlete participated in the Rome marathon in March, finishing eighth in 2h12:44, the first European to cross the finish line. Pasquale Selvarolo was originally scheduled to run alongside Meucci, but was forced to withdraw due to an injury.

The Roll of Honor for Italy

In the history of the marathon, Italy has triumphed in the Big Apple five times. These victories include Orlando Pizzolato’s double in 1984 and 1985, Gianni Poli’s success in 1986, and Giacomo Leone’s in 1996. The most recent Italian win was Franca Fiacconi’s victory in 1998. Italy currently ranks eighth in terms of total number of marathon wins.
