Christchurch Airport Embraces Electric Future With New Fire Truck
Christchurch Airport made a significant leap towards sustainability this morning with the unveiling of its first fully electric fire truck, a Rosenbauer RT model. The zero-emission vehicle is poised to revolutionize the airport’s emergency response, marking a clear commitment to a greener future.
Fire Chief Peter Moore highlighted the truck’s advancements, emphasizing the increased space for crew and enhanced safety features due to the absence of a combustion engine. "The quiet operation allows for better communication among team members, and the lack of diesel emissions improves air quality during emergencies," Moore explained, underscoring the multiple benefits of this innovative approach.
This eco-friendly truck, equipped with a backup range extender generator, will serve as the primary first-response vehicle at the airport, replacing the current diesel-powered model. It’s a pivotal step in Christchurch Airport’s broader sustainability strategy.
The airport already boasts a 100% electric corporate fleet and aims to transition all emergency response vehicles to electric by 2035. This goal aligns with their ambition to achieve a zero-emission fleet. Chief Executive Justin Watson reinforced this commitment, announcing a partnership with Rosenbauer to acquire a larger e-Panther electric fire truck in 2026.
"This new truck equips our emergency response teams with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring the safety of the airport community while progressing towards our zero-emission objectives," Watson stated, emphasizing the dual benefits of safety and environmental consciousness.
Senior Firefighter Trevor Casey, who has experienced the new truck firsthand, described it as "an amazing experience." He praised its smooth operation and advanced features, confident that these will translate into improved response times and overall capability. "The training has been extraordinary, setting us up for success," Casey added.
The introduction of this electric fire truck is a powerful testament to Christchurch Airport’s dedication to both safety and sustainability, setting a positive example for other airports around the world.
