Olivia Munn Shows Mastectomy Scars in Powerful Skims Campaign

Actress Olivia Munn is making a bold statement this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While initially approached to showcase Skims shapewear and leggings, Munn decided to go a step further by embracing her mastectomy scars in the campaign.

A Moment of Inspiration

“When Skims approached me to do this campaign, it was just to do their shapewear and their new leggings, and it wasn’t about my scar at all,” Munn told Today on Wednesday. During the photoshoot, a makeup artist began camouflaging Munn’s scars from her double mastectomy and reconstruction surgeries. It was in that moment that Munn realized she was ready to move past her insecurities.

“We were in the middle of the shoot and we were changing an outfit that could see more of my scars, and so the makeup artist was touching up my scars, and then we got to the double-mastectomy scars and they were really hard to cover up,” she said. “And then I was looking in the mirror and I just thought, I’m done being insecure about my scars.”

Embracing Her Journey

Munn, who revealed her diagnosis of Luminal B breast cancer in both breasts in March, has undergone a series of treatments, including freezing her eggs, removing her fallopian tubes and ovaries, and a mastectomy and reconstruction. As she shared in a Vogue interview in May, “Aggressive cancers need aggressive treatments.”

Despite her challenges, Munn continues to find joy in life. She and her husband, John Mulaney, welcomed their second child together, daughter Méi June, via surrogate in September. Their son Malcolm is now a big brother.

A Powerful Message

Munn’s decision to show her scars in the Skims campaign is a powerful statement of self-acceptance and a reminder that beauty comes in all forms. She encourages others to embrace their bodies and their journeys, no matter what challenges they may face.

“I said, ‘What do you guys think about showing my scars in this campaign?’ And they were so amazing and thoughtful and wonderful. And we talked it out and we decided to do it,” she said.
