euro Transition Troubles: Bulgarian Service Workers Still Facing Lev Payments

Since Bulgaria officially adopted the euro on February 1st, reports are emerging of continued challenges for those working in the service industry.Despite the switch too a single currency, many customers are still attempting to pay with the Bulgarian lev (BGN), creating difficulties for businesses and employees.

A waiter recently shared on social media that they have been regularly receiving lev payments from customers who claim to not have euros. “We don’t accept lev – there’s no way, but they still insist that I take them and exchange them ourselves,” the waiter explained, highlighting the ongoing frustration.

This situation indicates that while the euro is now the official currency, public awareness and preparedness for the transition remain incomplete. The expectation of a seamless shift to euro-only transactions has not yet materialized for all sectors of the Bulgarian economy, notably those reliant on direct customer payments. Further reports are expected as the transition period continues and authorities work to address public understanding and compliance with the new currency regulations.
