Pakistan Holds Steady on Fuel Prices Amid Global Volatility

Islamabad, Pakistan – March 13, 2026 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan will maintain current petroleum prices, defying a surge in the international oil market. This decision aims to alleviate the financial strain on Pakistani citizens, honoring a commitment made by the Prime Minister to provide relief whenever possible.

Maintaining Current Prices

Petrol prices will remain stable at Rs321.17 per litre, despite increasing global oil rates. According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the decision was made to reduce the burden on the “common man.”

Global Economic Pressures

Prime Minister Sharif acknowledged that regional tensions are creating pressure on the global economy, potentially impacting Pakistan’s economic stability. He emphasized the government’s commitment to managing the situation through timely policymaking, austerity measures, and financial discipline. Provincial governments are also cooperating with the federal government’s austerity initiatives.

Securing Crude Oil Supplies

The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan has secured adequate quantities of crude oil through the efforts of its diplomatic and economic teams. Both federal and provincial governments are working together to ensure that fuel is sold at government-approved prices.

Recent Price Hike and Public Reaction

This announcement comes just a week after the government increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre on March 6, 2026, in response to a sharp rise in global oil prices following escalating tensions in the Middle East. The surge in crude oil prices, from approximately $78 to over $106 per barrel, prompted the government to shift from a fortnightly to a weekly pricing review.

The previous price increase sparked widespread public outrage, with citizens expressing their frustration on social media using the hashtag #PetrolBomb. Concerns were raised about the potential impact on the cost of living, particularly for the middle and lower classes.

Looking Ahead

Prime Minister Sharif expressed hope that the global situation will improve and petroleum prices will stabilize. The government remains committed to providing relief to citizens and managing the economic challenges facing the country.
