Pakistan Military Operation Near Afghan Border Results in Multiple Casualties
Two Pakistani soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, were killed on Saturday during a military operation in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province near the border with Afghanistan. The incident occurred when an explosive-laden motorcycle rammed into a security convoy vehicle, according to the Pakistani army. At least five militants were as well killed in the operation, including one identified as a suicide bomber.
Clash Details and Military Response
The clash took place in Bannu district, KP province. The military stated that the security team successfully prevented the bomber from reaching civilians and law enforcement personnel, averting a potentially larger catastrophe. The army referred to the militants as “khawarij,” a term used for banned groups, including the Pakistan Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Accusations Against Afghanistan
Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban administration in Kabul of providing refuge to the TTP, a banned Pakistani group separate from, but linked to, the Afghan Taliban. However, Kabul has consistently denied these allegations. France24 reported on similar tensions in October 2025.
Pakistan’s Resolve
The Pakistani military issued a strong statement, declaring it would not exercise restraint and would continue operations against those responsible for the attack. “Pakistan will not exercise any restrain and operations would continue against the perpetrators of this heinous and cowardly act for justified retribution against khwarij, irrespective of their location,” the statement read. The army emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation.
Recent Surge in Violence
Bannu has been a frequent site of armed violence, with repeated attacks targeting security forces and police checkpoints in recent years. This incident is part of a broader surge in activity by armed rebel groups across KP province following the TTP’s end of a ceasefire with the government in late 2022. News18 reported that earlier in February 2026, separate attacks in the province resulted in over a dozen deaths.
Recent Incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Earlier this week, two bomb attacks and a gun battle between police and militants resulted in more than a dozen fatalities in the province. AP News reported that eleven security personnel and one child were killed in an attack in Bajaur district, while seven others, including women and children, were injured.
Border Clashes with Afghan Taliban
In October 2025, intense fighting broke out between Pakistani security forces and the Afghan Taliban along the border in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to state media. Hindustan Times reported that Afghan Taliban posts sustained heavy damage, with at least one tank destroyed.
