An excellence in reputation, medical treatment, and patient services. This is the recognition received on the occasion of World Diabetes day (november 14th) for the Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Romagna operational unit of the Morgagni-Pierantoni hospital in Forlì from the dossier ‘Hospitals of excellence – Guide to healthcare facilities in italy’ created by the German quality institute ITQF, together with the media partner Salute.
The Excellence of Hospitals in Romagna: A Journey into Departments That Lead in Italy
“For us, this recognition is first and foremost a reason for pride and gratitude,” underlines Silvia Acquati, acting director of the Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Romagna Operational Unit (Ausl Romagna). “It means that the daily work of the entire team – doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, dietitians, and psychologists – is valued, but above all that our patients can count on a cutting-edge treatment path. Being considered a center of excellence pushes us to do more and more to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes. This recognition motivates us to continue working and collaborating with other healthcare organizations to offer our patients the best possible standards of care.”
Dr.Acquati, the criteria include reputation, patient service, and research: which of these do you think you have achieved most and why?
“Among the evaluation criteria, we believe that the strong point of our team is patient service.Every day we strive to offer personalized assistance, attentive not only to the clinical but also to the human aspects of the treatment process. The gratitude we receive, often even just a smile or a thank you, represents our greatest satisfaction and reminds us how the optimization of the doctor-patient relationship is fundamental to achieving these goals.”
What were the operational steps (organizational, clinical, service) that you faced to reach this level of excellence?
“Our path towards excellence comes from the desire to offer assistance that combines competence and humanity. We have created dedicated spaces to welcome and accompany people at every stage of their journey, built structured and shared management processes, and formed multidisciplinary teams capable of working in synergy. A central role was given to the nursing role and collaboration, which made care more timely, responsible, and closer to the real needs of patients.”
How do endocrinology and metabolic diseases in Romagna differ from other regional or national realities?
“The strength of our reality is based on the union of three key factors: innovation, network, and attention to the needs of the patient and caregivers. We have built integrated care paths, which connect hospitals and the territory and accompany the patient with continuity and attention. We use advanced technologies – from continuous blood sugar monitoring to microinsulins, to technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot – which allow us to intervene increasingly early and effectively. This is accompanied by important screening programs for complications, fundamental for prevention and to improve quality of life.all this is absolutely possible thanks to close-knit multidisciplinary teams and the valorization of nursing work, which make care more timely, personalized, and closer to patients’ needs.”
What are the main innovations that have been introduced in the treatment of diabetes?
“In recent years, the treatment of diabetes has changed greatly thanks to various technological innovations in both the diagnostic and therapeutic fields. Today we have new generation drugs available, such as GLP-1 analogs.”
