Pollen Season Begins Early in Norway, Experts Urge Early Medication

The 2026 pollen season is underway in Norway, with a moderate spread of alder pollen already detected in Western Norway. Experts at the Norwegian Asthma and Allergy Association (NAAF) advise allergy sufferers to begin taking preventative medication now, potentially earlier than in previous years, to prepare for a potentially more intense season.

Early Start in the West

Measurements indicate a moderate spread of alder pollen in Western Norway, while Eastern Norway, including Oslo, is currently experiencing only sporadic occurrences. As is typical, the season begins in the west before spreading eastward and southward, according to Hallvard Ramfjord, senior pollen researcher at NAAF DinSide.

Potential for a More Intense Season

Despite a colder-than-usual winter delaying the start of the season, NAAF suggests this year’s pollen season could be stronger than last year’s, depending on weather conditions. “Pollen production in the trees seems to be somewhat higher this year. With good weather during the flowering period, the spread could be more intense than in 2025,” says Marte R. Øien, head of department for subjects, politics and communication at NAAF DinSide.

Cold Winter Delayed, But Didn’t Prevent, Pollen Release

The prolonged cold in January and February initially delayed the maturation of alder and hazel pollen. Yet, recent measurements confirm the season is progressing as expected – delayed, but underway. “The cold in January and February place development on hold, but we now notice that maturation has started. As soon as the temperature stays above zero for several days, the amount of pollen can increase quickly,” explains Ramfjord DinSide.

Alder and Hazel Pollen First

Alder and hazel trees are the first to release pollen, marking the beginning of the pollen season. The allergen content in these two species is very similar. While current levels are moderate, NAAF recommends allergy sufferers begin taking medication now, as most allergy medicines are most effective when taken preventatively DinSide.

Medical Advice and Preventative Measures

Doctors are also reporting increased preparation among patients for the pollen season. “For many, it pays to start treatment before the symptoms become pronounced. Antihistamine tablets and cortisone spray work best when used regularly throughout the season,” says Daniel Sørli, doctor and founder of Dr. Dropin DinSide. He also recommends eye drops for itchy and watery eyes.

NAAF recommends several simple measures to reduce allergy symptoms:

  • Start medication early in the season
  • Follow daily pollen warnings
  • Air clothes and bedding indoors on days with high pollen counts
  • Avoid drying clothes outside
  • Shower and wash hair before bed
  • Maintain windows open during periods of high pollen spread

Sørli adds that following pollen warnings, airing when levels are lower, and changing clothes after being outside can significantly reduce discomfort DinSide.

Birch Pollen on the Horizon

Oslo’s average start date for birch pollen is April 23rd, but this can vary depending on weather conditions. The strongest spread typically occurs during the first week after the season begins. Allergy sufferers are advised to have their medication ready before the birch pollen season fully commences DinSide.

Additional Treatment Options

For those with severe allergies, options beyond standard treatment are available. Allergy vaccination, either as daily tablets or injections, can reduce allergy symptoms over time. Newer antihistamines also tend to cause fewer side effects, such as fatigue, than older varieties DinSide.

Staying Informed

NAAF recommends allergy sufferers follow daily pollen warnings, as levels can vary significantly. Updated pollen warnings for Norway are available at naaf.no and in NAAF’s free app, “Pollenvarsel.” The app provides alerts tailored to your location, helping you plan outdoor activities.
