Pope Leo XIV Embarks on Extensive 2026 Apostolic Journey to Africa, Monaco, and Spain

Vatican City – Pope Leo XIV will undertake a series of significant international Apostolic Journeys in the first half of 2026, including a ten-day tour of Africa and visits to Monaco and Spain. The trips, announced by the Holy Spot Press Office, underscore the Church’s commitment to peace, evangelization, and engagement with regions experiencing both growth and challenges.

Africa: A Ten-Day Pastoral Visit

From April 13 to 23, Pope Leo XIV will visit Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. The journey will begin in Algeria, with stops in Algiers and Annaba from April 13 to 15. He will then travel to Cameroon from April 15 to 18, visiting Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Douala. The African tour continues to Angola, April 18 to 21, with visits to Luanda, Muxima, and Saurimo, before concluding in Equatorial Guinea, April 21 to 23, with stops in Malabo, Mongomo, and Bata. Vatican News reports the trip will focus on peace and care for the most vulnerable.

The visit to Algeria holds particular significance, offering an opportunity for interfaith dialogue in a majority-Muslim country. America Magazine notes the Pope has previously expressed a desire to visit Algeria to see places associated with Saint Augustine and to “continue the conversation of dialogue, of building bridges between the Christian world and the Muslim world.”

In Cameroon, the Pope’s visit will include the Anglophone region, where a civil war has been ongoing for ten years. Catholic Online highlights the Holy Father’s pastoral concern for regions affected by violence.

Monaco and Spain: European Engagements

Prior to the African tour, Pope Leo XIV will make a one-day visit to the Principality of Monaco on March 28. Following the African journey, he will travel to Spain for six days, from June 6 to 12, with planned stops in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands archipelago. Vatican News reports that in Barcelona, the Pope is expected to inaugurate the tallest tower in the Sagrada Familia.

Strategic Context and Global Outreach

These Apostolic Journeys follow Pope Leo XIV’s visits to Türkiye and Lebanon at the conclude of 2025 and signal a resumption of international pilgrimages. The Vatican presents these trips as a recalibration of diplomatic and pastoral priorities, with increased focus on regions experiencing demographic and religious growth. AP News reports that Africa accounts for roughly 20% of the world’s Catholics, making it one of the fastest-growing regions for the Church.
