Prabowo Subianto Promises Food and Energy Self-Sufficiency as Indonesia’s New President
In his inaugural speech on Sunday, President Prabowo Subianto outlined a bold vision for Indonesia: to become a self-sufficient nation in both food and energy.
In his inaugural speech on Sunday, President Prabowo Subianto promised to make Indonesia a self-sufficient country in food and energy, as part of his larger goal of building a more prosperous nation.
Sworn into office as Indonesia’s eighth president alongside his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Prabowo addressed the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) in Jakarta. The former defense minister emphasized the urgency of achieving food security, stating, “We cannot rely on external food sources. In times of crisis, in times of emergency, no one will allow us to buy their goods. Therefore, there is no other option but to achieve food security as soon as possible.”
This goal echoes a similar promise made by Prabowo’s predecessor, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, in 2015. However, Jokowi’s administration ultimately relied on importing over 3 million tonnes of rice last year.
Prabowo expressed confidence in his plan, stating that after consulting with experts, Indonesia could achieve food self-sufficiency within four to five years. He envisions Indonesia becoming a leading global food producer, declaring, “In fact, we will be ready to become the world’s food estate.”
Beyond food security, President Prabowo outlined several other key promises, including fulfilling his campaign pledge to provide free nutritious meals for all Indonesian school students.
President Prabowo Subianto’s ambitious agenda marks a new chapter for Indonesia. As he works to fulfill his promises, the world will be watching closely to see how this commitment to self-sufficiency will shape the nation’s future.
