Atletico Madrid Eliminated from Club World Cup 2025
California – Atletico Madrid’s campaign in the 2025 Club World Cup ended in disappointment, largely due to a heavy defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
Atletico Madrid concluded their Group B schedule with a narrow 1-0 victory over Botafogo, secured by an 87th-minute goal from Antoine Griezmann at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday. Simultaneously, paris Saint-Germain defeated Seattle Sounders 2-0.
This outcome resulted in a three-way tie at the top of Group B, with PSG, Botafogo, and Atletico Madrid all accumulating six points. A mini-table was then calculated, excluding Seattle Sounders who finished with zero points.
The head-to-head results saw PSG defeat Atletico Madrid 4-0, while suffering a 1-0 loss to Botafogo. Botafogo, conversely, secured a 1-0 win against PSG and a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.
PSG ultimately topped the group standings with a goal difference of +3. Botafogo claimed second place with a goal difference of 0,leaving Atletico Madrid in third due to a goal difference of -3.
Atletico’s elimination hinged on the notable loss to PSG in their opening match.Manager Diego Simeone expressed his regret over this result.
“It’s frustrating not to qualify. Six points in the group isn’t a bad return, but the match against PSG really cost us,” Simeone stated to Dazn.Simeone also voiced concerns regarding refereeing decisions, believing his team was unfairly denied penalty opportunities during crucial moments.
“Today we had chances to take the lead, and there was a clear penalty situation that wasn’t given, even after review from the previous game,” he added.
