For Robert Graham, any relief would be a welcome change. “I just want to be able to afford the medication I need to stay healthy,” he says. “It shouldn’t be this hard.”

In Kansas City they are not satisfied with that clarification. “They went there to liberate the European continent from fascism and racism,” says veteran Gray about the black soldiers. He is a former Marine himself. In recent years he has done a lot of research into the life of James Jr.,who,like him,grew up in a highly segregated Kansas City. As a black young man, James was not even allowed to cross the tracks, Gray knows.
“They also wanted racial equality in the US, that’s what they were fighting for.” Against that history, and the belated recognition from the White House, the apparent erasure of those hardships also hits black veterans like Gray hard. “We never thought they would go this low.”
Rights are disappearing little by little
“It’s the cheese slicing method,” says Carmaletta Williams, director of the Black Archives, an organization that documents the history and culture of African Americans in the US Midwest. “Every time rights are cut off,” she says,asked if America is going back in time. “Until you run out of cheese.”
She also points to the way Republicans are reshaping constituencies in the hope of scoring higher in next year’s midterm elections. Also in the state of Missouri, of which Kansas City is a part. “To such an extent that the black voice is diluted and almost disappears. We have to stand up against that.”
robert Gray, first sergeant himself for many years, is already doing that. He wrote a letter to the White House and to the cemetery supervisors of ABMC. “I hope that other veterans’ organizations will do the same. We will not allow our history to be dishonored.”
