Russian Jets “Dangerously” Intercept RAF Spy Plane Over Black Sea, UK Condemns Actions
Two Russian fighter jets “repeatedly and dangerously” intercepted an unarmed Royal Air Force (RAF) surveillance aircraft over the Black Sea last month, according to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The incident, described as the most severe Russian airspace confrontation since 2022, has intensified tensions between the UK and Russia amid heightened military activity in the region.
Details of the Intercept
The RAF’s Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft was conducting a routine international flight to support NATO’s eastern flank when it was approached by two Russian Su-35 and Su-27 fighter jets. The Su-35 came close enough to trigger the aircraft’s emergency systems, temporarily disabling its autopilot. Meanwhile, the Su-27 performed six passes in front of the RAF plane, coming as close as six meters (19 feet) to its nose, according to the MoD.
“This incident is another example of dangerous and unacceptable behaviour by Russian pilots, towards an unarmed aircraft operating in international airspace,” said Defence Secretary John Healey. “These actions create a serious risk of accidents and potential escalation.”
Historical Context and UK Response
The MoD highlighted that this incident marks the most dangerous Russian interception of an RAF aircraft since September 2022, when a “rogue” pilot fired a missile at a Rivet Joint over the Black Sea. The UK has since called on the Russian embassy to condemn the latest actions, emphasizing the need for de-escalation.
Healey reiterated the UK’s commitment to defending NATO, stating, “This incident will not deter the UK’s commitment to defend NATO, our allies, and our interests from Russian aggression.”
Regional Tensions and Military Activity
The interception occurred against a backdrop of growing Russian aggression in the Black Sea and North Sea. The MoD cited recent submarine activity near critical underwater infrastructure in the North Sea as part of a broader pattern of assertive military maneuvers. This has raised concerns among NATO allies about the stability of regional security.

Analysts note that such encounters reflect the heightened risks of miscalculation in contested airspace, particularly as NATO continues to reinforce its eastern flank in response to Russia’s military posturing.
International Reactions and Implications
The incident has drawn condemnation from NATO, with member states reaffirming their solidarity in the face of Russian provocations. The UK has also urged diplomatic channels to address the “unacceptable” behavior, though no immediate retaliatory measures have been announced.
As relations between Russia and the West remain strained, the Black Sea continues to be a flashpoint for military confrontations. The RAF’s surveillance missions, which provide critical intelligence for NATO operations, are likely to remain a target for Russian intercepts in the coming months.
The UK’s response underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining stability in a region where military posturing and geopolitical rivalries increasingly intersect.
