Raleigh – On Monday, September 22, lawmakers will discuss SB 153, a bill that would allow police to act as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents. The bill is set to become law if the veto is overturned.
The official legislative calendar still lists the discussion for this date.
the vote has been delayed twice. It was originally scheduled for discussion on July 30, then August 26, but was not held on either date.
The debate will decide if the veto override stays in place, making the bill law.
The SB 153 Route
This bill was proposed by Republicans in the North Carolina Senate.
both the Senate and the House of Representatives have already approved it.
However, Governor Josh Stein vetoed the proposal, arguing it would strain state resources. he believes it would force North Carolina law enforcement to handle federal immigration duties, reducing their ability to focus on local public safety.
“This bill would make us less safe,” he stated.
On July 29, the Senate voted to override the veto, with 30 votes in favor and 19 against.
The bill was then sent to the House of Representatives, where they will decide whether to uphold the override.
