The Uoc analysis laboratory of the Great Metropolitan Hospital of Reggio Calabria (Gom) concluded 2025 with notable achievements, solidifying it’s position as a leading center for scientific research and clinical diagnostics. The laboratory received two international awards, recognizing the dedication and expertise of its team.

Award for Multiple Sclerosis and Autoimmune Encephalitis Research

In November 2025, the laboratory was awarded first prize for best poster at the 30th annual Elas-Italia symposium. The winning study, titled “Difference in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) interleukin-6 levels in multiple sclerosis and autoimmune encephalitis,” was a collaborative effort with the Uoc of neurology. https://www.elas-italia.it/ (This link directs to the Elas-italia website, the organization hosting the symposium.)

interleukin-6 is a cytokine – a signaling molecule used in immune responses. Measuring its levels in cerebrospinal fluid can help differentiate between neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis and autoimmune encephalitis, which both affect the brain and nervous system but require different treatment approaches. This research contributes to more accurate and timely diagnoses.

Recognition for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Diagnosis in Pediatric Patients

The laboratory, under the leadership of Dr. Bruno Modafferi, also achieved first place at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, in December 2025. The winning poster, “Hemometric diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in pediatric patients: from the laboratory to the clinic,” was developed in collaboration with the Uosd of pediatric oncohematology. https://www.hematology.org/ (This link directs to the American Society of Hematology website.)

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow, and is the most common childhood leukemia. “Hemometric diagnosis” refers to using blood tests to diagnose the condition. This research focuses on improving the diagnostic process for pediatric ALL patients, bridging the gap between laboratory findings and clinical application for better patient care.

Commitment to Patient care and Scientific Excellence

These awards highlight the commitment of the laboratory’s team – including technicians, biologists, and managers – to providing high-quality services to patients. Dr. Tiziana Frittelli, the remarkable commissioner of Gom, expressed sincere gratitude to Dr.Modafferi and the laboratory staff on behalf of the strategic management. She emphasized that the awards represent recognition of both scientific excellence and a dedication to patient care and assistance.

The Great Metropolitan Hospital of Reggio Calabria’s Uoc analysis laboratory’s achievements in 2025 demonstrate its ongoing commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient outcomes through innovative research and diagnostic practices. The hospital anticipates continued success in the future, building upon this foundation of excellence.
