“Sinners” Sweeps NAACP Image Awards, Michael B. Jordan Honored as Entertainer of the Year

Ryan Coogler’s critically acclaimed film “Sinners” dominated the 57th NAACP Image Awards, securing a total of 13 wins, including Outstanding Motion Picture and the coveted Entertainer of the Year award for star Michael B. Jordan. The awards ceremony, held on Saturday in Pasadena and hosted by Deon Cole, celebrated Black excellence across film, television, music, literature, and podcasts.

“Sinners” Takes Top Honors

“Sinners” received accolades in numerous categories throughout the week-long celebration, culminating in Saturday’s televised ceremony. Michael B. Jordan was recognized as Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture and also received the Entertainer of the Year award. Miles Caton earned the Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture award for his role in the film. Prior to the main event, Ryan Coogler was honored for his directing and writing, while Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo were recognized as supporting actress and actor, respectively.

A Night of Recognition and Reflection

The ceremony wasn’t solely focused on celebrating artistic achievement. it also provided a platform for addressing contemporary social and political issues. Host Deon Cole opened the show with commentary on the political climate, referencing former President Trump and sparking a standing ovation with remarks about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Samuel L. Jackson paid tribute to the late Jesse Jackson, emphasizing the importance of preserving Black history and resisting attempts to erase it from the national narrative. Sterling K. Brown, accepting the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for “Paradise,” echoed this sentiment, stating, “Like Sam said, they can’t erase us because there is no country without us.”

Addressing the BAFTA Incident

The NAACP Image Awards also acknowledged the incident that occurred at the BAFTA Awards the previous week, where a member of the audience shouted a racial slur during a presentation by Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo. Cole referenced the incident with a comedic prayer, while Lindo spoke to the positive response following the event, stating it was “a classic case of something that could have been very negative becoming very positive.”

Beyond “Sinners,” other notable winners included Cynthia Erivo, who received the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture award for “Wicked: For Good.” On the television side, “Reasonable Doubt” was named Outstanding Drama Series, with Sterling K. Brown and Angela Bassett winning lead acting awards in the drama category. “Abbott Elementary” earned recognition as Outstanding Comedy Series, with Quinta Brunson winning Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series and Cedric the Entertainer taking home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.

Viola Davis was presented with the Chairman’s Award, while Salt-N-Pepa and DJ Spinderella were inducted into the award show’s Hall of Fame. Colman Domingo received the President’s Award.
