Last fall, Josue Garcia watched as manny of his sophomore classmates were called up to the St. Laurence varsity team. Garcia, however, remained with the junior varsity for the entire season. Though disappointed, the experience fueled his determination.
“I just stayed humble and trusted the process,” Garcia said. “I worked hard in silence and I just wanted to prove to everybody that I’m capable of doing anything that anyone else can do.”
Now a junior, Garcia has earned a starting position and is making a significant impact. In just his second career varsity game, he scored his first goal on Tuesday night, leading the Vikings to a 2-0 win over Shepard in the first round of the Windy City Ram Classic, hosted by Lincoln-Way West in New Lenox.
Alonso Gonzalez also scored for St.Laurence (1-0-1), which will face Lincoln-Way West (1-0) in the second round at 6 p.m. Thursday at Reavis.
Garcia, Paula reshale, Adrian Luna, and Heriberto Luna anchored the Vikings’ defense, supported by goalkeeper Vin Diesi, who held Shepard without a shot on goal.Nephaly Orozco made nine saves for the Astros (0-1).
Garcia’s impact extended beyond defense, as he aggressively joined the offensive attack. This paid off in the 13th minute when he scored from 30 yards out.
“It felt great,” Garcia said. “It was my first varsity goal.We were struggling to get one in,so I just had to try it and hope for the best and it went in. That was a good one to remember.”
The goal was notably meaningful after being held back the previous season. Garcia used the setback as motivation to improve and prove his capabilities.
