Strasbourg Mayoral Race Heads to Runoff: Trautmann, Vetter, Barseghian, and Kobryn Advance

Strasbourg, France – The first round of the 2026 municipal elections in Strasbourg has concluded, setting the stage for a potentially unpredictable runoff on March 22nd. Socialist Catherine Trautmann emerged as the frontrunner, followed closely by conservative Jean-Philippe Vetter, with incumbent Jeanne Barseghian and Florian Kobryn also qualifying for the second round.

First Round Results

According to initial estimates from the Ministry of the Interior, the results of the first round are as follows:

  • Catherine Trautmann (PS): 25.93%
  • Jean-Philippe Vetter (LR): 24.23%
  • Jeanne Barseghian (EELV): 19.72%
  • Florian Kobryn (LFI): 12.03%
  • Virginie Joron (RN): 7.00%
  • Pierre Jakubowicz (Horizons): 5.10%

Potential Alliances and Strategic Considerations

The fragmented results suggest a complex path to victory in the second round. Several potential alliance scenarios are being discussed.

Left-Wing Consolidation?

A merger between Jeanne Barseghian’s ecologist list and Florian Kobryn’s La France Insoumise (LFI) appears to be a logical possibility, given the overlap in their voter bases. However, strong personalities on both sides could complicate negotiations. Barseghian has stated her commitment to keeping Strasbourg on the left, and indicated openness to a merger with LFI, whereas also criticizing Trautmann as “conservative and reactionary.”

Center-Right Options

Pierre Jakubowicz, whose list garnered over 5% of the vote, theoretically has the option to merge with one of the leading candidates. Jean-Philippe Vetter reportedly reached out to Jakubowicz before the first round without success, and has stated he will not pursue further alliances. Vetter hopes to attract voters dissatisfied with the current government, focusing on issues of security and purchasing power.

Trautmann’s Strategy

Catherine Trautmann has indicated she will analyze the results to identify potential vote transfers and target undecided voters. She has ruled out an alliance with Vetter and appears to be positioning herself as a unifying force, emphasizing her project and “freedom” over strict party alignment. She believes the momentum from the first round will carry her to victory.

What’s Next?

The candidates have until Tuesday, March 17th, at 6:00 PM to finalize their lists for the second round. The coming days will be crucial as they attempt to forge alliances and mobilize their supporters. The outcome of the runoff remains uncertain, with the potential for a close and contested election.
