Texas Investigates Auto Giants: Uncovering the Data Behind the Wheels

The battle for automotive data privacy is heating up in Texas as Attorney General Ken Paxton launches an investigation into data collection practices of major automakers. Targets include Ford, Hyundai, Toyota, and Stellantis (formerly FCA).

Paxton’s probe aims to shed light on the extent to which these companies gather and utilize personal data from drivers. The lawsuit seeks detailed information about the methods, products, and features used to collect data, as well as the identity of any third-party recipients. This includes a breakdown of the number of Texas customers and vehicles impacted, and a comprehensive explanation of how driving data is collected, shared, and sold.

Interestingly, preliminary findings indicate that Toyota may be holding more sensitive information about drivers than its competitors. The investigation zeroes in on Connected Analytic Services LLC (CAS), a company linked to Toyota Insurance Management Solutions USA. While Toyota acknowledges that CAS utilizes telematic data to improve ownership experiences and refine insurance rates, they remain tight-lipped on the specific details of the ongoing investigation.

Ford, on the other hand, issued a strong statement asserting they do not sell connected vehicle data to data brokers. The company also claims to have halted data sharing with insurers last year. They emphasize their commitment to responsible data management in line with customer preferences.

This latest investigation builds on Texas’s proactive stance on data privacy. Just this month, the state launched an investigation into Allstate and its subsidiary Arity. In August 2021, GM faced legal action for allegedly collecting and selling customer data without consent.

These actions underscore the growing concern surrounding auto data privacy in the age of connected vehicles. Understanding what data is collected, how it is used, and the potential risks is crucial for consumers. This investigation adds fuel to the fire, highlighting the need for greater transparency and consumer control over their automotive data. The outcome of the investigation will undoubtedly impact the future of data privacy in the automotive industry.
