The SNCF presented the first “oxygen” train on Thursday, intended to replace the coral intercities of the Paris-Clermont Ferrand and Paris-Orleans-Toulouse (POLT) lines, known for their delays regularly denounced by users.

Called “Oxygène”, this new train model designed by the Spanish manufacturer CAF, offers a light wooden interior, more comfortable armchairs, electrical and USB sockets at each place, locations for bikes, 22 additional places and will reduce the Paris-Clermont journey by a quarter of an hour.

This train, unveiled Thursday at the Technicentre in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in Val-de-Marne, should be authorized to drive on the National Ferré network in December 2026, and travelers will be able to discover it in 2027, the year the majority of the 28 new trains will be delivered.

These trains were initially deployed from the second half of 2025, but the manufacturer had announced delay.

– More comfort and better accessibility –

The “oxygen” trains have 418 places against 396 for the corals, with 101 red seats reserved for first class, including around forty in the first “premium” with more spacious seats.

People with disabilities also have more room. They can stay in a chair, or transfer to a seat and attach their folded chair with a belt. A traction bar also makes it possible to get up more simply and SOS buttons to request help are arranged as close as possible.

The cars are equipped with signage in Braille and positive relief for the visually impaired. The seats are higher, to make room for guide dogs.

Another novelty, “video protection” cameras are installed in cars. The Rame has 10 bike places, numbered to reserve its location, sockets being planned to recharge the electric bikes.

“Mounted in Paris with determination, everyone descends in their province in prey to anger. The POLT (700 km of railway) and Clermont-Paris (420 km) lines carry 2.6 and 1.9 million travelers each year in intercity trains respectively.

SNCF Travelers also announced at the end of 2024 to buy 22 other “oxygen” trains for the Bordeaux-Toulouse-Marseille line, which should be delivered in 2029 according to Alain Picard, CEO Director of CAF France. An operation of 650 million euros fully funded by the State which subsidizes this “balance of the territory” (TET).

On the total control of 50 trains, 42 will be integrated in the Reichshoffen factory (Bas-Rhin) although the first was at least partly manufactured in Spain.

According to Alain Picard, the State will have to decide in 2028 if it commands other “oxygen” trains, the ambition of which is to replace Corail intercities.

“It depends on the projects of the State on other intercity lines. For example, we heard about a Nancy-Lyon which could even descend lower, so to see what the State decides,” he added.
