The government of USA announced this Friday that he will pardon the student debt of 804,000 people for a value of 39,000 million dollars (about 34,700 million euros).
According to US media reports, the measure will apply to beneficiaries of repayment plans based on income, people who have been paying their debt for between twenty and twenty-five years and who will now see it cancelled.
The president, Joe Biden, pointed out that the measure is part of his commitment to education, despite opposition from the conservative party.
“Republican lawmakers have done everything they can to prevent me from providing aid to American workers,” he said in a statement.
The Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardonaexplained for his part that the action is aimed at debtors who have long been affected by the “cracks of a broken system that has failed them.”
