New Road Traffic Act Amendments Now in Force: Stricter Penalties & Average Speed Cameras

About 50 sections on highways and speeds will be equipped with medium speed reporting cameras.

The new amendments to the road Traffic Act are already in force, and higher fines are introduced in the case of serious violations.

As of august 5, 2025, the latest amendments to the Road Traffic Act, published in the State Gazette, issue 64, have officially entered into force. The changes are part of the efforts to increase road safety and the introduction of stricter control over violations.

What is changing? Here are the main innovations:

Toll cameras will now detect average speed.

Approximately 50 sections on highways and speed roads will be equipped with medium speed reporting cameras.The frist sections of the Thrace highway where average speed will be controlled are:

between Vakarel and Ihtiman – 19 km
From the fork to Kostenets to the fork to Muhovo (including the Trajanov Gate Tunnel) – 23 km
From the junction to Kostenets to the Traian Gate tunnel – 9 km
From the fork to velingrad to the junction for Kalugerovo – 10 km
From Pazardzhik road junction to Tsalapitsa road junction – 22 km
From Pazardzhik road junction to Plovdiv road junction – 28 km
From Pazardzhik road junction to Plovdiv road junction – 35 km
From the road junction of Plovdiv east to the Belozen road junction – 25 km
From Rice Road to Risen to Chirpan road junction – 9 km
